Usability & UX Basics – Understand, Apply, Improve

Our Lecturers

Prof. Dr. Britta Essing is a trained psychologist (Dipl.-Psych.) and honorary professor at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. She heads the "Human-Centered Engineering & Design" department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT. Her expertise lies in usability engineering, user experience (UX) design, and human-centered technology development.

For many years, she has been actively involved in the practice-oriented training of usability professionals and is a co-founder of the Usability Network Bonn/Rhein-Sieg. As a member of key expert committees – including DIN, DAkkS (formerly DATech), and the German UPA – she contributes her experience to the development of standards and certification procedures in the field of usability. Her work is characterized by a strong integration of research, teaching, standardization, and transfer into industry and society.

Dr. Marc Jentsch leads the “Innovation Engineering” team at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT. He works in the areas of human-centered design, design thinking, innovation development, and project management, both in (inter-)national research projects and in contract research projects funded by private industry.

He has led project consortia at both the European and national level and has more than 16 years of professional experience in funded projects — both in terms of content, primarily user research, ideation, prototyping, and evaluation, as well as in project management. Marc Jentsch holds a diploma in Geoinformatics from the University of Münster and a PhD in Computer Science from RWTH Aachen University. He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), an OMG Certified UML Professional, and a TÜV Certified Usability Engineer.

Marisa Koopmann has been part of the "Usability & UX Design" team at Fraunhofer FIT since early 2024. She completed her Master’s degree in Usability Engineering in 2023. Prior to that, she worked at Fresenius Medical Care, where she contributed to the user-centered development and evaluation of medical devices, gaining valuable insights into regulatory requirements and relevant standards (e.g., IEC 62366).

Through her academic training and practical experience, she has developed solid expertise in the planning, execution, and analysis of usability tests. Since 2024, she has been part of the leadership team responsible for the training program for Certified Usability Engineers.

Lina Mebus is a research associate at Fraunhofer FIT, focusing on human-centered design, co-design, and service design. She leads workshops on design thinking and citizen science and applies human-centered innovation methods.

Her research focuses on the technologization of hospice association work. Previously, she worked as a user experience manager in the B2B sector and as a user interface designer in digitalization projects for public administration services. In addition to her research, she is a guest lecturer at the Cologne International School of Design, volunteers as a trained end-of-life companion, and is a member of the COST Working Group for interdisciplinary research collaborations.

Milad Morad works as an AI researcher in the Human-Centered Engineering & Design department at Fraunhofer FIT and as a doctoral candidate at the Chair of Computer Science at RWTH Aachen University.

For more than six years, he has been focusing on the future technology of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including serving as a Product Owner in various AI software projects in research and industry. His current research focuses on Human-AI Teaming and the adaptation of foundation models to enterprise domains.

Marius Nißlmüller is a research associate at Fraunhofer FIT and has been working in the Human-Centered Engineering & Design department since 2022. After completing his master's degree in media informatics at RWTH Aachen University, he specialized intensively in research and practice in the areas of user engagement, human-computer interaction (HCI), human-AI, and design.

He actively contributes his expertise in design thinking, ideation, and prototyping to training courses and workshops in order to impart the necessary knowledge to others. His passion for user-centered approaches and innovative solutions is reflected in his projects, which aim to optimize the interaction between people and technology.

Alexander Schneider is an expert in the practical application of technology-based solutions in small and medium-sized enterprises. He has been collaborating for several years with SMEs about designing, implementing and integrating innovative technologies such as (generative) AI, data driven process optimization and digital twins.

He supports companies in creating customized AI workflows and process automation solutions that can be used profitably in areas such as knowledge and process management, process optimization, and sustainability.
